Chevening's 2027-2028 application window for Pakistani students closes October 6, 2026. Here is the full eligibility checklist, what the scholarship requires, and how to apply before time runs out.
The Chevening Scholarship, the UK government's flagship award for future leaders, is open for its 2027-2028 intake, and the application window closes on 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC -- 4:00 pm Pakistan time. For Pakistani students hoping to pursue a fully funded master's degree in the United Kingdom, that leaves roughly a week to get a complete, competitive application submitted.
What Chevening Actually Requires
Chevening's eligibility rules are specific, and missing even one can rule out an otherwise strong candidate, so it's worth checking each point against your own situation:
- You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country -- Pakistan qualifies -- and you cannot hold British or dual British citizenship (the only exceptions are British Overseas Territory citizens and BN(O) status holders from Hong Kong)
- You cannot be a refugee applying from a country where refugees are not eligible to apply
- You must not be resident in the UK at the time you apply
- You need at least two years of work experience, calculated as a minimum of 2,800 hours, completed after finishing your undergraduate degree
- You need an undergraduate degree that would qualify you for a UK master's programme, completed at least two years before the application deadline; you don't need the physical degree certificate in hand until your interview stage
- Already holding a master's degree does not disqualify you from applying for funding toward another one
- You must commit to returning to Pakistan for a minimum of two years after your scholarship ends
A few categories of applicants are excluded outright: current government employees, British Council staff, and close relatives of people in either group. If you have previously received a UK government-funded scholarship, you are also ineligible to apply again.
The University Offer You Need
Chevening doesn't just want an application form -- it wants proof you can actually get into a UK university. As part of your application, you need to apply to three different Chevening-eligible courses at UK universities and secure an unconditional offer from at least one of them by the scholarship's own deadline. This means your university applications and your Chevening application effectively run on parallel tracks: if you haven't yet started reaching out to UK universities, that needs to happen immediately alongside finishing your Chevening form.
After You Apply
Chevening has already published a rough timeline for this cycle: candidates who clear the initial screening should expect interview invitations from February 2027, with the interviews themselves running through March and April 2027. That's a long wait after the October deadline, so if you don't hear back right away, that delay is normal -- not a sign your application was rejected.
A Practical Note on Partner Awards
Alongside the standard Chevening award, a number of partner organisations offer supplementary scholarships that run through the same Chevening application process but are sometimes less competitive simply because fewer applicants know about them. If you're generally eligible for Chevening, it's worth checking whether any partner award matches your field or background -- it costs nothing extra and could meaningfully improve your odds.
Getting Started
All applications go through Chevening's own online system. You'll need a working email address and phone number to register and receive your access code before you can begin. Given that the deadline is 6 October 2026 at 11:00 UTC, and that a strong Chevening application typically takes real time to write well -- particularly the personal statement and leadership essays -- Pakistani students who are eligible and interested should treat this as an urgent, this-week task rather than something to revisit later in the month.
