FPSC has moved the CSS 2027 MPT screening test from September 27 to October 10, 2026. Here is what changed, what stayed the same, and how the test fits into the CSS exam process.
The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has rescheduled the MCQ-based Preliminary Test (MPT) for the CSS Competitive Examination 2027. According to a public notice issued on August 19, 2026, the test was originally set for Sunday, September 27, 2026, but has now been moved to Saturday, October 10, 2026. FPSC rescheduled the exam after a protest was announced to take place on September 27, and the commission has clarified that only the test date has changed — all other terms and conditions for CSS 2027 candidates remain the same.
For the thousands of aspirants preparing for this year's Central Superior Services exam, the date change means an extra two weeks of preparation time, but it also means adjusting study plans, travel arrangements, and, in some cases, leave requests from current jobs. Candidates who had scheduled their final revision around the September 27 date should recalibrate around October 10 instead.
What Exactly Is the CSS MPT?
The MPT was introduced by FPSC in 2022 as a mandatory screening filter that every CSS candidate must clear before their descriptive written papers are evaluated at all. It does not contribute to final merit — it functions purely as a gatekeeper. Candidates who fail to clear the qualifying threshold are eliminated at this stage, and their written papers are not assessed further.
The test consists of 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 200 minutes, spread across six subject areas with the following mark distribution:
- General Science & Ability: 60 marks
- English: 50 marks
- Pakistan Affairs: 20 marks
- Islamic Studies: 20 marks
- Current Affairs: 20 marks
- Urdu: 20 marks
- General Knowledge: 10 marks
That adds up to 200 marks total. The qualifying benchmark is 66 out of 200, or 33%. Importantly, there is no negative marking on the CSS MPT, so leaving a question blank carries the same cost as answering it incorrectly — meaning candidates who are unsure of an answer generally lose nothing by attempting it anyway.
Where the MPT Fits in the Overall CSS 2027 Timeline
Online applications for CSS 2027 were open from August 3 to August 20, 2026, which means the candidate pool for this cycle has already been finalized — the rescheduling only affects the date of the screening test itself, not who is eligible to sit for it. Once the MPT results are announced, only qualifying candidates move on to the descriptive written examination, which is scheduled to begin on January 27, 2027.
This structure means the MPT functions as a high-stakes but low-detail hurdle: candidates need broad general knowledge and English proficiency rather than deep subject mastery, since the format is entirely multiple-choice. Many aspirants underestimate this stage precisely because it looks easier than the written exam, but FPSC data from previous cycles has shown a significant proportion of applicants fail to clear the 33% threshold.
What Should Candidates Do Now?
With the test now falling on October 10, 2026, candidates have a slightly longer runway. Practical steps worth taking in the additional time include:
- Revisit current affairs coverage through September and early October, since this section rewards up-to-date knowledge over rote memorization.
- Practice timed MCQ sets to build speed — 200 questions in 200 minutes leaves almost no room for lingering on any single question.
- Confirm your allocated test center and roll number slip once FPSC issues it, since venue assignments can occasionally change alongside date revisions.
- Keep monitoring FPSC's official announcements (fpsc.gov.pk) directly, since this is not the first time a CSS exam date has shifted in recent cycles, and further administrative updates are possible.
FPSC has stated that no other conditions of the CSS 2027 process have changed because of this reschedule, so candidates who have already prepared their application materials, photographs, and domicile documentation do not need to resubmit anything. The only adjustment needed is to the date circled on the calendar — from September 27 to October 10, 2026.
