USEFP's 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program lets Pakistani PhD-holding academics teach or research at a US university for up to 10 months. Applications close October 28, 2026 -- here's who's eligible and how to apply.
The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened applications for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program, a US government-funded opportunity for Pakistani academics and researchers to spend time teaching or researching at an American university. If you're a PhD-holding academic considering it, the window is short: applications close on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
What the program offers
Selected scholars spend up to 10 months at a U.S. college or university, either on a teaching lectureship, a postdoctoral research placement, or a combination of both. The program covers all academic disciplines except clinical medicine, so researchers and faculty from the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and professional fields are all eligible to apply.
The grant itself covers round-trip airfare, a living stipend, health insurance, an incidental research allowance, and assistance with the visa application process. Scholars may also bring one dependent along under program funding; additional family members can travel with the scholar but aren't covered financially by the grant.
Who can apply
To be eligible, you need to be a Pakistani citizen currently residing and working in Pakistan, and you must hold a PhD or other terminal degree in your field for at least two years at the time of application. USEFP divides applicants into two eligibility bands: early-career faculty and researchers with two to seven years of experience since completing their PhD, and senior scholars with eight to fifteen years of post-PhD experience. You'll also need a strong command of written and spoken English; USEFP does not require a separate standardized English test as part of the application.
A few categories of applicants are not eligible this cycle. You can't apply if you completed your PhD within the last two years, if you've spent time in the United States for research or another long-term educational opportunity within the past five years, or if you hold dual US-Pakistani nationality. Immediate family members of US citizens or permanent residents, current Fulbright or US Department of State employees, and anyone currently studying in the US or holding a work or residence visa in another country are also excluded.
What your application needs
USEFP asks for a completed application form, three reference letters, and the standard supporting documents. The centerpiece of the application is a detailed research or teaching proposal, which the foundation describes as the most important part of the whole package, so it's worth giving it real time and thought rather than treating it as a formality. If you're applying for a lectureship rather than a research placement, you'll also need to show evidence of your university-level teaching experience and ability, along with documentation of a university invitation where applicable.
Two application rules are worth flagging clearly. First, USEFP explicitly states that generative AI tools must not be used to write your application essay or proposal. Second, plagiarism, fraudulent publications, or any misrepresentation in your application can lead to disqualification at any stage of the process, even after an initial selection.
After the grant
Fulbright scholars are expected to engage with their host community while in the US, sharing information about Pakistani society and culture with American students, colleagues, and community groups. On returning to Pakistan, scholars are likewise expected to share what they learned and experienced in the US with their own students, colleagues, and communities, extending the program's value well beyond the grant period itself.
How and when to apply
Applications are submitted entirely online through USEFP's application portal at applications.usefp.org. The foundation does not accept paper applications, and incomplete submissions won't be considered, so it's worth starting early rather than waiting until the last day. With the deadline set for October 28, 2026, eligible academics who are interested should treat this week as the time to finalize references, pull together supporting documents, and submit, rather than leaving it to the final hours.
