The Higher Education Commission has invited Pakistani PhD candidates to apply for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, offering research stays or full PhD study in Switzerland, with applications due October 31.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has invited applications from Pakistani doctoral candidates for the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for the 2027-28 academic year, with a deadline of October 31, 2026. The programme, funded by the Swiss government and assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS), offers two separate tracks. The first is a one-year Research Scholarship for candidates who are already pursuing a PhD at a Pakistani university but need to carry out part of their research under a Swiss supervisor. The second is a three-year PhD Scholarship for candidates who want to complete an entire doctoral degree in Switzerland. PhD-track applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent by July 31, 2027 (June 30, 2027 for ETH Zurich) and must have been born after December 31, 1991. Selected scholars receive a monthly living allowance of CHF 2,450, a one-time CHF 600 allowance toward a rental deposit, compulsory health insurance, a Half-Fare Travelcard for Swiss public transport, and a return flight allowance for eligible candidates from outside the EU/EFTA region. The scholarship does not cover university tuition or semester fees, which can range from roughly CHF 600 to CHF 2,000 per semester depending on the institution, nor does it fund conference travel or field research. The Research Scholarship runs for six to twelve months and cannot be extended, while the PhD Scholarship begins with a twelve-month award that can be renewed twice, for a maximum of thirty-six months, based on satisfactory academic progress. Applicants must first identify a Swiss university and professor whose research area matches their own, since every application requires a formal letter of support from that Swiss supervisor; HEC and ESKAS note that securing this letter can itself take weeks or months, so candidates are advised to start early. Along with the supervisor's letter, applicants must submit a research proposal and timeline in the FCS/ESKAS format, a motivation letter, an updated CV, academic certificates and transcripts, two professor recommendations, and a passport copy. All applications must be submitted through the online Grants Online (GO ESKAS) portal before the deadline; applications sent by email or on paper are not accepted. Selected scholars are expected to begin their programme in Switzerland on September 1, 2027.
