USEFP has opened the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program, offering Pakistani academics and researchers up to 10 months of fully funded lectureship or research time in the US. Applications close October 28, 2026.

The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened applications for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program, giving Pakistani academics and researchers a fresh opportunity to spend up to ten months in the United States on a fully funded lectureship, postdoctoral research placement, or a combined teaching-and-research assignment. Unlike the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, which targets graduate students and already closed its 2027 cycle back on April 1, 2026, the Scholar Program is built for people already established in their academic careers, and its window is still open -- applications are due by Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

    Who Can Apply

The program is aimed squarely at working academics rather than students. To be eligible, you need to:

    • Be a Pakistani citizen currently residing and working in Pakistan
    • Hold a PhD or another terminal degree, completed at least two years before applying
    • Fall into one of two experience bands: early-career researchers with two to seven years of experience since finishing their PhD, or senior scholars with eight to fifteen years of post-PhD experience
    • Be working in any academic discipline except clinical medicine

USEFP also lists several disqualifying factors worth checking before you invest time in an application. You cannot apply if you completed your PhD within the last two years, if you have visited the United States for research or education at any point during the preceding five years, or if you hold dual Pakistani-American nationality. Current holders of a US or other international visa, along with close relatives of US citizens in certain categories, are also excluded. Strong English proficiency is required, but USEFP does not ask for a separate language test score as part of the Scholar Program application.

    What the Scholarship Covers

Selected scholars receive round-trip airfare, a living stipend, an incidental research allowance, and health insurance for the duration of their stay, which can run up to ten months. The program also provides support for one accompanying dependent -- a meaningful benefit for scholars who would otherwise have to fund a family member's travel and stay separately.

    How to Apply

Applications go through USEFP's online application system only; paper submissions are not accepted. A complete application needs:

    • The completed online application form
    • Three letters of reference
    • Supporting academic and identity documents
    • A detailed research or teaching proposal describing what you intend to do during your time in the US

One detail worth flagging: USEFP has explicitly stated that applicants cannot use generative artificial intelligence software to write their application essay. Given how easy it has become to lean on AI tools for exactly this kind of writing, this is worth keeping in mind before you sit down to draft your proposal -- write it yourself, in your own voice, describing your own research agenda.

    Why the Deadline Matters

October 28, 2026 is not far off, and a Fulbright Scholar application is not something you assemble the night before. Between arranging three reference letters, writing a genuinely strong research or teaching proposal, and gathering supporting documents, most successful applicants start well ahead of the deadline. If you are an early-career researcher checking whether you fall into the two-to-seven-year band, or a more senior academic confirming that your last US visit falls outside the five-year exclusion window, it is worth reviewing USEFP's eligibility notes carefully, or contacting USEFP directly, before you begin.

    Should You Apply

If you are a working academic in Pakistan with a PhD and an idea you want to pursue at a US institution, this is one of the more generous and long-established international scholar exchange programs available to Pakistani researchers -- fully funded, open to nearly all disciplines, and administered by a foundation that has run this exchange for decades. The main cost of applying is your own time, and with roughly a month left on the clock, that is the resource worth budgeting carefully starting today.
