USEFP's Fulbright Scholar Program 2027 deadline is October 28, 2026. Here's who's eligible, what's funded, and why your U.S. university invitation letter is the step you can't afford to delay.
The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened the 2027 cycle of the Fulbright Scholar Program, and the application deadline — October 28, 2026 — is now less than three weeks away. This particular track is aimed at established Pakistani academics and researchers, not students, so if you hold a PhD or terminal degree and are looking for a funded research or teaching stint in the United States, here's what you actually need to know.
What the Program Offers
The Fulbright Scholar Program funds up to 10 months at a U.S. college or university. Scholars can structure their time as a lectureship, postdoctoral research, or a combination of both, depending on what fits their field and career stage. Funding, per USEFP's own program description, includes round-trip airfare to and from the United States, a living stipend for the full duration of the grant, an incidental research allowance, health insurance coverage, and support for one accompanying dependent. Scholars also get access to the host university's facilities and resources for the duration of their stay.
Who Can Apply
To be eligible, you need to meet all of the following:
- You are a Pakistani citizen currently living and working in Pakistan.
- You hold a PhD or terminal degree in your field (or are recognised as a distinguished leader in your field).
- Your discipline is anything except clinical medicine — all other fields are eligible.
- You have excellent written and spoken English; notably, USEFP does not require a separate English proficiency test score for this program.
- You can secure at least one invitation letter from a U.S. university before you apply — this is required at the time of application, not after.
- You can put together a clear, well-formulated research or lectureship proposal, which USEFP describes as the single most important part of the application.
Award slots are split by career stage: about 80% of grants go to early-career scholars with 2 to 7 years of experience since their PhD or terminal degree, and the remaining 20% go to senior scholars with 8 to 15 years of post-PhD experience.
Who Is Not Eligible
USEFP excludes a specific set of applicants, so check this list carefully before you invest time in an application:
- Dual U.S./Pakistani nationals, and applicants whose spouse, parent, or child over 18 is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Employees of the Fulbright organization or the U.S. Department of State, and their close family members.
- Anyone currently studying in the U.S., or currently holding a work or residence visa in any other country.
- Anyone who has previously participated in the Fulbright Scholar Program.
- Clinical medicine practitioners, as noted above.
Required Documents
Based on USEFP's published application requirements, you'll need:
- A completed online application form.
- Your CV.
- A detailed research or lectureship proposal.
- An invitation letter from your host U.S. university.
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates.
- Letters of recommendation.
- A copy of a valid passport.
A detail worth flagging: USEFP's 2027 application announcement specifically warns applicants against using generative AI tools to write their application essay — make sure your proposal and essay are written entirely in your own words.
How to Apply
- Go to usefp.org and read through the full eligibility criteria for this cycle before you start.
- Begin working on your research or lectureship proposal early, since USEFP calls it the most important part of your application.
- Start reaching out to potential U.S. host universities as soon as possible — securing an invitation letter is often the slowest part of the process and is required before you can submit.
- Complete the online application form and upload every required document before the October 28, 2026 deadline. USEFP accepts online applications only; paper submissions and paper references are not accepted.
- Wait for the selection process to run its course after the deadline closes.
Why the Invitation Letter Matters Most Right Now
With under three weeks until the deadline, the single biggest bottleneck for most applicants is the U.S. university invitation letter, since you cannot submit without one in hand. If you haven't already contacted a prospective host department, that should be your first move today — not your proposal draft, not your CV. Everything else in the application can be assembled faster than it takes a U.S. faculty host to respond to a cold email and agree to host you.
If you have questions specific to your field or situation, USEFP's scholar program team can be reached at scholar@usefp.org or by phone at 051-8431300. As with any funding program, treat usefp.org as the final authority on eligibility and deadlines, and confirm your specific case with them directly if anything here doesn't match your situation.
